Outdoor Activities

Some of the best hunting Texas has to offer.

Big bucks and trophy antlers. Sporting and relaxing. Hunters flock to the area each year to hunt the bountiful lands of the Nueces Canyon. With oak trees, springs, and abundant native grasses, the Nueces Canyon is a hot spot for hunters looking for turkey, deer, axis deer, dove and more. If you aren’t into shooting a gun then look to fishing the rich waters of the Nueces River and tributaries. Teaming with bass, catfish and more it is a rare day when a fish isn’t caught….and we are never short on a fishing story!

Just make sure you are a legal hunter or fisherman, local businesses do sell permits and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens do patrol the areas.

Swimming Holes galore.

A Texas Monthly Top Ten. The Nueces River has done it again and this time just a short walk from the edge of the City of Camp Wood. The locals have known the spot for decades as the Swimming Hole. Just west of Camp Wood and down Seventh Street lies a cliff where the water is so blue you just want to fall in and swim.
During the seasons when the area is not in a drought, the Swimming Hole is deep and hungry for a crowd of energetic water enthusiast. The spot was listed in Texas Monthly’s Top Ten Swimming Holes.
The area is public land and the cliffs provide areas for nesting before going for round two, three or more!

50th Annual Old Settler’s Reunion Rodeo

It’s a tradition to have a Friday and Saturday night rodeo during the annual Old Settler’s Reunion. Just a short distance north on Hwy 55 outside of Camp Wood is the Bruce Park Arena, home to the roping, bronc riding, and just rodeo-ing. The rodeo takes place two nights in a row and is scheduled for Friday, August 5th and Saturday, August 6th this year. The event is hosted by the Nueces Canyon Roping Club. It’s a place to see the clown staring down the bulls, or watch your friends race the barrels.

There is a gate fee when entering and more information will the posted pertaining to gate fees, schedules, and contact persons as the event draws near.
