50th Old Settler’s Reunion Huge Success!

The Nueces Canyon Chamber of Commerce reports that the 50th Annual Old Settler’s Reunion was a huge success! Thousands of supporters bared the 100 plus degree heat on Friday and Saturday to enjoy the once a year festival held in downtown Camp Wood. Floats such as Car Mater, First State Bank of Uvalde and the Sweeten Reunion were among the many that entered the half hour long parade.
The Chamber of Commerce extends a big thank you to everyone that came out this year!

The Results of the Old Settler’s Reunion is in...the Winners are:

The Pecan Pie Contest: First Place-Barbara Herpeche; Second Place-Melody Plumley; Third Place– Mary Faulkes. Other pies were entered by Regina Hill, Marc Delgado, Caria Whittenburg, Jamie Light, Pat Rogers, Baylee Plumley. The Pecan Pie Auction raised approximately $1,030; those monies help pay for the cost of hosting the Old Settler’s Reunion by the NC Chamber of Commerce. The Pecan Pie Contest/Auction Co-Chairs were Dale Nance and Steve DeLaHaya. Auctioneer was Tom Taylor.

The Parade Winners: First Place Commercial-First State Bank of Uvalde; Second Place Commercial-Tow Mater; First Place Non-Commercial-NC Panther Band; Second Place Non-Commercial-NC Cheerleaders; First Place Non-Profit—Sweeten Family; Second Place Non-Profit—Hidalgo Family; First Place Most Unique—Merritt Family; Second Place Most Unique-Redneck Trash Company; First Place Horses—Vernors Freight and Grace; Second Place Horses—Sara Merritt; Third Place Horses—Gus Hernandez and Roberto Martinez. The Parade Co-Chairs were Jamie Hidalgo and Donna Stewart.

Talent Show: First Place—LaGina and Steve Evans
United Fiddlers Fiddling Contest: 0-15 category: 1st-Jeff Rosinbaun, Boune; 2nd-William Pierce Coats, Springdale, Ark. 50-80 category: 1st-Dusty Britches, Bandera, TX.
80 and over category: 1st Jim Barton, Hondo, TX. Grand Champion: Dusty Britches. Guitar Picker: Sonny Herpeche; Bass Picker: Cecil Reeves. Entertainers: Maude Arnold, Kelley Longbothan, Cecil Reeves, Jim Barton, Sonny Herpeche, Dusty Britches, Jeff Rosinbaun.

Set amongst some of the most beautiful western parts of the Texas Hill Country, Nueces Canyon is home to the headwaters of the Nueces River. Tourist flock to the area during the warm seasons to tube, float, fish, kayak and swim in the crystal clear water.

Autumn months prove to be a colorful fusion of vibrant colors on the rolling hills. Hunters become part of the community while deer season is open. Watch the first of two tourism promotions that the Chamber of Commerce has had filmed in the areas.
