Christmas in the canyon

For over twenty years a small town tradition has taken place in the heart of the Nueces Canyon…Camp Wood, Texas.

What began as an often cold evening around the campfire in Lindbergh Park downtown, has become a full evening affair with business owners opening their doors for a community Open House. The Nueces Canyon Chamber of Commerce hosts Christmas in the Canyon on the second Saturday of December every year. Merriment abounds as locals and visitors step out on the sidewalks of a beautifully decorated downtown Camp Wood and walk through the doors of those stores and offices participating in the Open House. Merchants serve up refreshments, door prizes and a lot of welcoming smiles as visitor meander through the stores visiting and shopping.
In addition to the Open House which is held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the Nueces Canyon Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary sponsor Santa’s big trip to the Nueces Canyon. Santa visits the downtown streets and will end up handing out goody bags at Holy Smoke Bar B Que. Santa is driven around by Dirty Red and Uhaul on their exclusive and very well lit Wagon that is pulled by a John Deere Tractor. The wagon and tractor are lit up with hundreds of Christmas lights as carols are piped out into the refreshing winter air. The event is a short one but one that will get your spirits lit up for the Holidays!
Although there is not a parade or vendors per se, there are many things to do downtown on this night…everyone is welcome to attend. Merry Christmas from the Chamber of Commerce!
